As the bird flies

When was the last time you talked to your parents? This one is not just for those people who do not live at home. It’s also for those who live at home. When was the last time you spoke to your parents?
Not just “hey I am back home, is dinner ready” or “hello mom everything fine here on wok front, how’s home doing?” something more than that.
For all those people like me who live away from home, talking to parents is how the week has just passed, how we have eaten whatever is necessary, how we have not had too much alcohol, how they should not get too irritated if we have had and of course the usual blah blah about take care of your health etc.
A friend of mine has made many compromises in life just because she wanted to be there for her parents every time, for every little thing … used to make fun of her saying she has never learned to live on her own feet. Realize it’s the other way around; I have never grown up enough to realize it’s not we needing our parents but our parents needing us. Strange thought aint it. Dammit girl … u should drilled that into my head.
But thinking of it from the parents’ point of view, here is a someone who they have invested their whole lives in, made amazing number of compromises for, watched them grow up made every decision including which colour clothes to wear and suddenly one fine day they are deciding what their parents should do. Hmmm... now how does that feel?
Guess for our parents we never grow up … like my dad says to my “STOP I am not a kid anymore” dialogue that I throw at him... “For me you are always a child” never ceases to piss me off. HUH! I have grown up … haven’t I … why do I need advice … I am indestructible … I don’t need anyone. YEAH RIGHT!
I do dutifully send gifts at birthdays and anniversaries and wish them correctly too … but all our parents want is a little HELLO … a little time to talk, nothing earth shattering, nothing wildlife saving, nothing that will radically change anything … just a hello and a chat about what they want, what they are going through, what they don’t like … LIFE IS NOT JUST ABOUT YOU … however much you want to believe otherwise.
